The Reading Garden

Boyfriend Material

Making a choice about which book to buy can be difficult. Especially when there is something about a book, but you are not sure if it’s the book for you right in that moment. Books find you when you need them, they meet you where you are, and this one, this one did that for me.

More than once did I hold this book in my hand, putting it back softly. Saying not today. Then one day, that day had come. In the middle of the day, sitting at Costa, with my notebook and too-large coffee. Earbuds in my ear, thinking, how about today?

The Book in short
When tangentially ― and reluctantly ― famous Luc O’Donnell is forced back into the spotlight in the worst possible way, he has to think fast if he wants to save his floundering reputation. Enter Oliver Blackwood. Stunningly handsome and effortlessly put together, Oliver is successful, an ethical vegetarian, and has never appeared in a scandal mag even once. In other words, he’s perfect boyfriend material and exactly what Luc needs to appear respectable again. But when their fake relationship starts to feel like real romance, Luc and Oliver might have to consider whether they’re willing to fight for the truth of their new relationship…scandal, and consequences, be damned. My Thoughts
This book was so incredibly good, I really enjoyed it. I actually enjoyed it enough to put the physical books on my Christmas list. This was the first book I read from this Author, and I think there is something so lovely about the writing style.

Everyone we meet, Luc’s co-workers, his friend group, and Oliver’s friend group, all feel as if they have known each other for a long time. It also feels as if they are characters with real backstories. It makes you fall into their banter easily. You believe Bridget’s work emergencies, for example. It feels genuine, which makes the book easy to read.

I find Luc to be so interesting; he is someone who doesn’t want to get hurt, and thus, he hurts himself by closing himself off. I loved the relationship between Luc and Oliver and how they learned to understand each other and accept that the other was very different from themselves. I can’t stress enough that this book is so very fun. I adored so much about it. At three in the morning, when it was finished, I immediately got the next one on Audible; it was that good.

There is enough going on that keeps you interested, but a lot of it isn’t high stakes for the main characters, which makes the moment when there are high stakes even more enticing. As I said, it’s just good, an absolute recommendation.
