The Reading Garden

Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer

The back of this book made me laugh, and I thought the cover was so cute I just had to read it.

The Story in Short
ASSISTANT WANTED: Notorious, high-ranking villain seeks loyal, levelheaded assistant for unspecified office duties, supporting staff for random mayhem, terror, and other Dark Things In General. Discretion a must. Excellent benefits.

With ailing family to support, Evie Sage’s employment status isn’t just important, it’s vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn’s most infamous Villain results in a job offer—naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don’t find evil so attractive, Evie.

But just when she’s getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat…and not just the literal kind. Because something rotten is growing in the kingdom of Rennedawn, and someone wants to take the Villain—and his entire nefarious empire—out.

Now Evie must not only resist drooling over her boss but also figure out exactly who is sabotaging his work…and ensure he makes them pay.
After all, a good job is hard to find.

My Thoughts
Sometimes when you read something you enjoy, you are kicking your feet, giggling all the way through, or is that just me? I must say it is what happened with this book. It was so much fun. I hardly ever had as much fun with a book in recent years as I did with this one.

Evie is so absolutely hilarious from the get-go go I was very hooked. Somewhere at the beginning, she talks about being all these things starting with the letter F.

flighty, foolish, forgetful, a most strange turn of events, she was finally able to add the final F. Fucked

As I said, I find her inner voice to be hilarious, and I am not doing it justice. The Villain is lovely too. He is over-the-top villainous in a storybook sort of way; it is fantastic.

There was an arc, and it was actually pretty dramatic and a decent twist. There was a good set-up for the next book without it feeling forced or unfinished.

I thought it was really good, it was clever and witty, and I think it’s one of those feel-good books that just work really well. Of course, I had to buy the sequel, and a third one is out too. With this review finished, I really should get on that.
