Low Maintenance hair colouring
I started going grey when I was about sixteen. Just a few silvery threads at first. Easy enough to pull out, and although family and I noticed, no one else noticed. But as things like that go. I was worried. It wasn’t exactly a surprise when it happened; my mother had the same early start. But as a girl or a young woman, those small things feel absolutely massive.
At that point in time, I was already colouring my mother’s hair. I have been doing that with professional products for years, and although I am not the best, I did transform her hair in a significant way. She taught me that even though hair dye covers your hair, it can dry it out. This is not ideal, especially if you are aiming to grow or keep your long hair healthy, like I am.
I took a different path, a gentler, less-is-more approach to colouring.
I see my hairdresser not quite twice a year. The goal is simply to cover and soften the grey by adding well-placed highlights. They blur the lines between silver and brown, growing out without a fuss. It’s subtle, almost as if the sun got carried away.
When I grew up, around the time of my short hair. I had a decision to make, I could fret about these greys for the rest of my life, or I could embrace them for what it is. My hair is healthy, and my hair colour is great. I do not have to hide. It’s part of me, and honestly, I would rather have grey’s than nothing at all.
My approach is low effort, low damage, and low drama. It is also easier on the wallet, which, let’s be honest, is a lovely bonus.
If you are looking for a way to cover your greys without the endless root touch-ups, this might be your answer. We are talking about blending, not covering.
Ask for a natural-looking highlight, explain what you want and more importantly, why. Share your goals, especially if you’re hoping to grow your hair long or keep it strong.
As for me, I’ll be going back to the salon at some point. I am thinking spring.
