After the Credits

Sherlock S1-4 (2010-2017)

I could have sworn I had already talked about this show before, but when I was doing my “Films you should watch this season”. I found out that I had not. No matter what I thought, I’ll rewatch, and then I realised I have rewatched this series for the third time.

Does it make me my favourite? I am pretty sure I have never watched a series that many times. A film, sure, but not a show. It’s different too, as I am now very familiar with the source material.

The series in short
The quirky spin on Conan Doyle’s iconic sleuth pitches him as a “high-functioning sociopath” in modern-day London. Assisting him in his investigations: Afghanistan War vet John Watson, who’s introduced to Holmes by a mutual acquaintance.

My Thoughts
This is a really great modern re-telling of an old classic while still making it fresh and interesting. Each episode is about an hour and a half, but it does not feel that long at all. Not every episode was as interesting as some of the others, but overall, it is great.

I think the first season is their strongest. I always fly through the first season and watch them one after the other, which is really strange for me as I don’t usually do that.

The second series is also quite good, but the third episode is so very complex, and also sad. But it is similar to the book, I must say, where there was a moment that felt very similar.

Then Mary is introduced, and I don’t care very much for her character at first. I think her sweet, and she seems a good, although not a necessary addition, but then with the plot twist, that niceness from before evaporates, and it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. She is also quite a big character, and I understand that, but the dynamic does change because of it.

After that, it all becomes a bit much. The overarching theme of the final series aren’t as good to me. Every single time I watch it I am a bit disappointed the show does not have the spark of the first two. But then I remember it fondly and I start a rewatch and the start is always so good.

Overall I do enjoy the whole thing but I like the first two seasons the best.
