Red, White and Royal Blue (2023)
Red, White and Royal Blue is my favourite book as far as books in my twenties go.
The film in short
When the feud between the son of the American President and Britain’s prince threatens to drive a wedge in U.S./British relations, the two are forced into a staged truce that sparks something deeper.

My Thoughts
The first time I watched this movie, I did not like it all that much because I was so aware of all the things they changed, the things they left out where they did not have to do that at all. The June and Nora relationship, for example. But most of all, the fact that Alex had himself figured out.
I understand that this is a hard thing to put on the screen, hence the absence of his sister being so profound. But I loved that most about the book. It was, to me, the greatest strength of the book. It made the need to hide come from two sights, making it a bit more equal to me.

Having said all that, I watched it again. This time around, I appreciated it for what it was much more than that I felt the loss for what it wasn’t. Would it have been a killer multiple-part show? Yes, absolutely, but it was lovely as a film too.
Having said all that and being all nice. I absolutely hated Alex’ wardrobe. It was not at all what I had pictured nor what was written in the book, and I felt wrong for his character. He looked as if he was going for frat boy on vacation instead of politician-by-the-time-I-am-thirty. But it might be a matter of taste. I was deeply unimpressed by Henry’s wardrobe, too, as there was so much they could have done. You have a whole host of different, more relaxing outfits than what he wore, and (almost) no one wears a suit jacket in their house doing emails.
Zara was even more amazing in the film than she was in the book. I enjoyed all the supportive characters, and overall, I think they did really well with the film. Had I not read the book beforehand, it would have been amazing, and it would have influenced my decision to read it (I would have gone out to buy it immediately). Overall, the book was better, but it is such a great book that the film was great too! Especially when you don’t compare them but enjoy both for what they are.
