The Peaky Blinders S1-S6 (2013-2022)

Truly, I had thought I had given this series a fair chance and that it simply wasn’t for me. Years went by and low and behold. I found out I never even finished the first episode. That isn’t, giving it a fair go in any world. I then finished the first episode, started the second, and went on. Before I knew it the second season was starting up and I had to be honest with myself. It was actually really good, but did it hold up for the rest of the seasons?

The series in short
A gangster family epic set in 1900s England, centering on a gang who sew razor blades in the peaks of their caps, and their fierce boss Tommy Shelby.

My opinion
All the cards on the table I think that Helen McCrory (Polly Gray) was a wonderful actress and I revisited this series purely for her. I think she was brilliant in the series and I loved her betrayal of Polly. I think all the women in this series were very well done, they were empowered in a way that I love to see but it still feels authentic to the time period.

The betrayal of the effects of the war on not only the men but also the women is so interesting. Especially the fact that women were liberated a lot during wartime but were then put back into the mold they were in before the war. It’s an interesting and accurate concept. I thought the series overall was very fun. I must say that when the mafia came about I got a bit upset. It felt as if the series took a nose dive into needless killing and I wasn’t that big of a fan. The thing that made me very confused at first was the massive time skips between seasons. It keeps the series fast past but sometimes I had to check in with myself and give a good thought about when something had happened. The shots of the environment in this series are amazing, it really sets you up for whatever it is that is going to play out.

There were a few things I didn’t like very much, it had more to do with some relationships. Such as after Tommy finds his wife and she dies he has another child with Lizzy whom I didn’t really like. A lot of the women had multiple children that we never really got to know which was a bit sad. When Polly passed in the first episode of the final season it was difficult to watch (the actress had passed between filming of the fifth and sixth season) She was such a big part of the series. It wasn’t the same without her. I adored her in this series, the rest of the cast was also great. The last episode was incredible, it was a great ending to a well-loved series.

I loved this series, it had great pacing. It was fun enough to make me want to watch the whole series, it was a mob/mafia type style show but with a much better style. It was a lovely watch, there were enough twists and turns to keep me entertained. It was a great series, if you haven’t watched it I recommend giving it a go.
